2 recent lessons that hit different!

By July 8, 2025No Comments

Last week, I was at a trail running conference, it was energizing to see how much the sport is growing. Trail running feels less niche every year, which is awesome!

But what stuck with me most were two things I heard that apply way beyond running…

Kilian Jornet was talking about juggling everything – work, family, training – and he said something powerful:

“Try not to compromise, but prioritize things. We only have limited time, can’t do everything. Focus on the now, not always on what’s next.”

This hit me right in the gut. I’m constantly thinking three steps ahead instead of nailing what’s right in front of me.

Then Jim Walmsley said in a separate conversation on stage:

“The whole point of it all is giving our best. That’s the only thing we can control. Results, wins, trophies – not really in your control. Show up, give your best effort and figure out how to best prepare for it.”

These guys are at the top of their sport, but they’re talking about the same stuff we all deal with…

  • Focus on now
  • Control what you can control
  • Do your best with what you’ve got

Here’s what I love about this: It’s always the simple stuff that works best. Even world-class athletes come back to the fundamentals!

And while it’s simple, it’s tough to actually live it (I’m sure you can relate)… But I’m trying my best to apply both this week – prioritizing instead of cramming everything in, and focusing on effort over outcomes.

What’s one thing you’re going to let go of this week so you can focus on what really matters?

I’m off to Badwater 135 tomorrow to pace and crew my friend Jeff Pelletier, he’s going for a podium finish so that should be an epic and hot adventure in the desert. More about that soon.

Have fun out there on your runs!
