“The more goals you actually achieve, the more you will feel motivated to go for them. If you set yourself monumental goals, you’re setting yourself up for failure.” – Penny Jarvis on The Extramilest Show #138
Penny Jarvis started running at 44 as a busy working mum with three boys and a full-time hospital job. She ran her fastest marathon at 72 in 3:45 and won the age group World Championship at 75 in 3:57. In this episode, she shares how she trained, built confidence, stayed injury-free, and found friendship and purpose through running.

This episode is brought to you by Precision Fuel & Hydration! I’ve been using their energy gels and electrolytes for years, and they’ve become a staple in my race day and long run nutrition strategy. Dialing in your nutrition can make a massive difference in both your performance and enjoyment on race day. I personally aim for 90g of carbs per hour, which works out to three of their gels per hour. Each gel contains 30g of carbs, they’re easy on the stomach, and the flavor is mild enough that you won’t hit that dreaded flavor fatigue deep into a marathon or ultra. A few quotes from my conversation with Penny Jarvis:
- “The one person that’s your real competition is that person you look at in the mirror every morning.”
- “Don’t be frightened to go. Don’t worry what anybody else thinks. You’re your own judge.”
- “It’s certainly not too late and they will feel so much better for it. But for goodness sake, start gently.”
- “Only set yourself little bite-size targets. Every target you achieve is a positive and builds you as a stronger person and you will feel more confident.”
- “Running is so much more than just you doing it for yourself.”
