From hating running to 100K in the mountains | Extramilest Show #111

By October 17, 2025No Comments

My running training partner Lewis Wu, hated running at first. “I found it boring” he says.

What changed? He bought a Garmin… Suddenly, he could see the mileage accumulating, times dropping, progress building week by week. And being someone who loves data at his core, all these new metrics made him excited and made running seem more interesting. This was 10 years ago.

Recently, Lewis finished his first 100K mountain race!

Lewis Wu is the CEO of COROS, an ultrarunner, and a climber who has learned from the best athletes, like Eliud Kipchoge and Kilian Jornet. We discuss how to grow in training, racing and life.

A few quotes from Extramilest Show #111 with Lewis Wu:

1. “I hated running at the very beginning. I found it boring… I love data. The accumulated mileage and improvement over time that got me actually excited.”

2. “The key thing is make sure you sleep well the week before. Cuz in the end, what decides your total body performance is your weekly average sleep, not the night before.”

3. “Tapering — Your brain knows you’re getting into something very difficult tomorrow and your brain doesn’t want to go there. So it starts some odd pain in some parts of your body, but all of those will go away tomorrow.”

4. “Without the focus, I end up not achieving anything… I needed to focus and that’s why I picked running as my primary sport at least over this summer.”
