After sitting down with Olympic champions, world record holders, and elite coaches over the past several months, I noticed something surprising: the best runners in the world keep coming back to the same handful of ideas. In this solo episode, I break down the 6 themes that kept repeating across my last 10 conversations, and share how my own thinking on low heart rate training has evolved after 14 years.

6 themes that keep coming back::

  • 2:14 — Theme 1: Consistency, Sustainability, and the Long Game
  • 5:15 — Theme 2: Let Go of the Outcome and Trust the Process
  • 11:39 — Theme 3: Leave Your Ego Behind and Pace Yourself Wisely
  • 16:40 — Theme 4: Master Your Internal Dialogue
  • 28:03 — Theme 5: Difficulty, Failure and Uncertainty Are Part of Growth
  • 37:13 — Theme 6: Be Present, Keep It Playful and Enjoy Running

I also share how my Zone 2 thinking has evolved after 14 years:

  • 45:58 — How My Zone 2 Training Thinking Has Changed

A few quotes from this episode:

  • Floris Gierman — “Instead of finding the frustration in it, what if you found the joy and the challenge in it?”
  • Sara Hall — “Resilience is like a muscle. The more you fail, the less you’re afraid of it.”
  • Jakob Ingebrigtsen — “You can’t pull a carrot from the ground to check if it’s growing. You have to believe in the process.”
  • Molly Seidel — “Sometimes the act of just doing it is more powerful than doing it perfectly.”
  • Rachel Entrekin — “Attitude is the only thing we have 100% autonomy over.”
  • Sara Hall — “You can’t live four years for something that may or may not happen. You have to love the process. That’s when you win every time.”
  • Ian Sharman — “It is not your fastest mile that matters. It is your slowest mile.”
  • Albert Shank — “Don’t think your fastest days are behind you or that you can’t do hard things anymore. I think that’s false.”
  • Ryan Hall — “Where you’re going to find the most peace is wherever you are, doing whatever you’re doing, fully there.”
  • Ian Sharman — “If over a six-month period you’ve been able to do about 90% of what you’ve been aiming for, that is excellent.
  • Sara Hall — “Keep it playful. Think of a kid and how much fun they have running. Make that the goal.”
  • Rachel Entrekin — “The only regrettable thing is not learning from your mistakes.”

I am a recreational runner. Run about 20-25 miles a week currently. Weighing at 190 lbs. 33 years old. Been running seriously for about a year. My goal is ultramarathons and my all time is something like cocodona. My fueling seems to be my biggest setback. My stomach doesn’t seem to like much and I’m a very heavy salty sweater. I’d love some pointers on how to get better. I’m very new to running but very determined. I LOVE running. I started running to help me with my anxiety and panic attacks.
