What I learned from 100+ elite athletes

By December 4, 2025No Comments

I was recently on the Strength Running podcast with Jason Fitzgerald.

We discussed 11 years of podcasting for The Extramilest Show, what I’ve learned from interviewing hundreds of elite athletes and experts, and the biggest lessons I wish I had known when I started running.

Jason asked great questions, and we went deep on strategies you can use in your own training and running!

Here are just a few of the things we covered:

  • Heat training, cold exposure, and cross-training strategies in detail
  • Why slowing down actually makes you faster (the Dr. Phil Maffetone lesson)
  • The runner stuck at 11-minute pace who improved by over a minute just by sleeping more
  • How phone behavior disconnects you from your body, and what to do about it
  • Why Kipchoge focuses on joy and smiling during runs
  • And so much more…

A few quotes by me from my conversation:

On health & running: “Dr. Phil Maffetone focused on health first and running second. That to me was very eye opening. I was always focused on running to become a better runner. You have to run faster and train harder. And then actually getting my eyes open to the whole part of slowing down to speed up.”

On joy & consistency: “Kipchoge talks about the importance of joy in training, the importance of consistency. You can actually smile at the end of a run. That to me was very interesting.”

On recovery: “You can do all the training in the world, but if you’re not absorbing it because something is blocking it, identify what that is. Is that the sleep? Is that the nutrition? Is that any other factor in your life?”

On sleep: “There was one runner who for several months tried low heart rate training and for about four months was just stuck at the same pace. I asked him, ‘How many hours of sleep are you getting a night?’ Sure enough, he slept only 5 hours a night. Once he slept 7 hours a night, his aerobic pace improved by more than a minute within 4 weeks.”

On enjoying the process: “Let the running come to you. Try not to force it too much. Go stand outside of your own body and be an external coach towards yourself. Most of all, just enjoy the runs. We’re doing this for fun.”
